Frenchie Nymph – Hot Spot Pheasant Tail Variant
Frenchie Nymph – Hot Spot Pheasant Tail Variant
The Frenchie is a hot-spotted Pheasant Tail variant that has become one of the most popular nymphs in modern fly fishing. Take the proven effectiveness of a Pheasant Tail, add a fluorescent hot spot collar behind the bead head, and you get a fly that's slightly more visible and slightly more triggering than the original — without sacrificing any of the natural profile that makes the Pheasant Tail so effective.
Originally popularized by competition anglers in Europe, the Frenchie has earned its place in American fly boxes because it simply catches more fish. The hot spot acts as a focal point — it gives trout something to aim at and triggers strikes from fish that might inspect and refuse a standard Pheasant Tail.
When to Fish It
Year-round as a general-purpose nymph. It's effective everywhere — tailwaters, freestone rivers, spring creeks, pocket water. Fish it under an indicator, euro style, or as a dropper below a dry fly. Sizes 14-18 cover most situations. It works as a standalone fly or as part of a multi-fly rig. When you're not sure what to start with, this is a strong default choice.

Why Anglers Stock This Fly
The Frenchie bridges the gap between imitative and attractor nymphing. It looks natural enough to fool picky fish, but the hot spot gives it an edge in faster water and lower visibility conditions. If the Pheasant Tail is the most versatile nymph ever created, the Frenchie is the upgrade. Hand-tied with quality materials by tiers with over 30 years of experience.
