Bead Head Pheasant Tail Nymph
Bead Head Pheasant Tail Nymph
If you could only fish one nymph for the rest of your life, the Pheasant Tail would be a strong contender. It's the most versatile, widely effective subsurface fly pattern ever created — a mayfly nymph imitation that works on every trout stream in America, in every season, in nearly every condition. The bead head version adds weight to reach the strike zone quickly and a subtle flash that increases visibility in faster or deeper water.
Frank Sawyer designed the original Pheasant Tail decades ago, and it's barely been improved upon because the original was already near-perfect. The natural pheasant tail fibers create a buggy, translucent body that looks like a living insect underwater — and trout eat it without hesitation.
When to Fish It
Year-round, everywhere. This is truly an all-season, all-water pattern. Fish it under an indicator, euro style, as a dropper below a dry fly, or on a swing. It imitates mayfly nymphs (BWO, PMD, Sulphur), small caddis larvae, and general aquatic insects. Sizes 12-18 cover most situations. When in doubt about what to fish, start here.

Why Anglers Stock This Fly
The Pheasant Tail is the most universally effective nymph in fly fishing. Period. Ask any guide what five flies they'd take to an unknown river and the Pheasant Tail will be on every list. The natural materials create a profile and translucency that synthetic patterns can't match. Carry them in sizes 14-18 and you're prepared for 80% of the trout fishing situations you'll encounter. Hand-tied with quality materials by tiers with over 30 years of experience.
