Bead Body Scud
Bead Body Scud
Scuds — freshwater shrimp — are one of the highest-calorie food sources in a trout's diet, and on waters where they're present, trout eat them constantly. The Bead Body Scud imitates these small crustaceans with a curved hook that mimics the natural shape of a swimming scud and a translucent body that matches the olive and gray tones of the real thing. The bead adds weight to keep it near the bottom and along vegetation where scuds live.
This isn't a seasonal pattern — scuds are available year-round in tailwaters, spring creeks, and stillwater. They don't hatch, they don't emerge, they're just always there. Which means this fly is always relevant. On lakes and reservoirs, scud patterns can be the single most productive fly in your box, especially when fished near weed beds and drop-offs.
When to Fish It
Year-round on any water that holds scuds — tailwaters, spring creeks, lakes, reservoirs, and ponds. Fish it near the bottom along weed lines and rocky structure. On stillwater, fish it under an indicator with a slow hand-twist retrieve. On rivers, dead-drift it through runs and along banks where vegetation grows. Sizes 14-18 cover most situations.

Why Anglers Stock This Fly
Scuds are the cheeseburger of the trout world — high calorie, always available, and trout never pass them up. On tailwaters and stillwater where scuds are present, this pattern can outproduce any mayfly or caddis imitation. The curved hook and translucent body are what make it work — cheap scud patterns with straight hooks don't look right and trout know the difference. Hand-tied with quality materials by tiers with over 30 years of experience.
