Zebra Midge Black Mirage
Zebra Midge Black Mirage
The Zebra Midge is arguably the most productive small fly in existence, and the Black Mirage version takes it up a notch with a flash body that imitates the air bubble trapped inside a midge pupa as it rises toward the surface. That tiny shimmer is exactly what trout key in on during midge emergences — it's the difference between a natural-looking fly and one that actually triggers the feeding response.
Don't let the small size intimidate you. Some of the biggest trout in any river spend their days sipping midges because it's an easy, energy-efficient meal. A size 20 Zebra Midge has caught more 20-inch trout than most streamers ever will. Fish it with confidence.
When to Fish It
Year-round, but it's at peak effectiveness during midge emergences — typically morning and evening in warmer months, and midday in winter. Fish it deep under an indicator during non-hatch periods, or just below the surface film when you see trout rising with subtle head-and-tail rises (a telltale sign of midge feeding). Deadly as a dropper below a larger nymph or dry fly.
