Zebra Midge Nymph (Black) – Minimalist Midge Larva for Trout
Zebra Midge Nymph (Black) – Minimalist Midge Larva for Trout
The Black Zebra Midge is the most universally effective small fly in trout fishing. A black thread body with silver wire ribbing and a small bead head — that's it. The simplicity is what makes it deadly. It imitates midge pupae and larvae that trout eat in massive quantities year-round on every type of water, from mountain creeks to spring-fed tailwaters to alpine lakes.
Don't let the small size fool you — some of the biggest trout in any river spend their days eating midges because it's a low-effort, high-reward feeding strategy. A well-placed Zebra Midge has caught more trophy trout than most streamers ever will.
When to Fish It
Year-round, everywhere. Peak effectiveness is winter and early spring when midges are the primary food source and other insects are dormant. Fish it deep under an indicator, as a dropper below a larger nymph, or suspended just below the surface film during midge emergences. The black body is the most versatile midge color — it works in clear water, dark water, and everything in between. Sizes 18-22.
