Zebra Midge Nymph (Red) – Minimalist Midge Larva for Trout
Zebra Midge Nymph (Red) – Minimalist Midge Larva for Trout
The red variation of the classic Zebra Midge — one of the most productive small flies ever created. The red thread body imitates bloodworm-stage chironomid larvae and pupae, giving trout a slightly different look from the standard black version. On days when trout are refusing the black Zebra Midge (it happens on pressured water), the red version often gets the eat because it triggers a different feeding response.
Like all Zebra Midges, the simplicity is what makes it deadly. Wire ribbing over a thread body, a small bead head, and that's it. No extra materials to fall apart, no complicated profile that looks wrong from the wrong angle. It looks like food from every direction, and trout eat it confidently.
When to Fish It
Year-round, with peak effectiveness during midge activity in winter and early spring. Fish it deep under an indicator, as a dropper below a larger nymph, or suspended in the surface film during midge emergences. The red body is especially visible in deeper or slightly off-color water where the standard black version might disappear. Sizes 18-22.

Why Anglers Stock This Fly
You should carry Zebra Midges in at least two colors — black and red. The red gives you an alternative when fish have seen too many black ones, and it more closely imitates bloodworm-stage larvae that trout eat in huge quantities. At this price, there's no reason not to have both in your box. Hand-tied with quality materials by tiers with over 30 years of experience.
