Zebra Midge Nymph (Red) – Minimalist Midge Larva for Trout
Zebra Midge Nymph (Red) – Minimalist Midge Larva for Trout
The red variation of the legendary Zebra Midge — a simple thread-and-wire midge pattern that imitates bloodworm-stage chironomid larvae and red-bodied midge pupae. While the black Zebra Midge is the default, the red version fills a critical gap on days when trout are keyed in on bloodworms or when they've seen too many black midges and need something different to commit.
The red body is especially visible in deeper or slightly off-color water where the standard black can disappear. On tailwaters with heavy chironomid populations, trout eat red midge patterns aggressively because bloodworm larvae are a major part of their diet year-round.
When to Fish It
Year-round, with peak effectiveness during winter and early spring midge activity. Fish it deep under an indicator, as the bottom fly in a two-nymph euro rig, or suspended just below the surface film during midge emergences. The red body stands out more than black in deeper water, making it a strong choice when you need visibility at depth. Try it when the black version stops producing — often that color switch is all it takes. Sizes 18-22.

Why Anglers Stock This Fly
Every serious midge angler carries Zebra Midges in at least two colors — black and red. The red gives you a plan B when trout have seen too many black ones, and it more closely imitates the bloodworm larvae that make up a huge portion of the trout diet on many waters. At this price, there's no reason not to have both colors in your box. Hand-tied with quality materials by tiers with over 30 years of experience.
