Tungsten Red Dart Barbless Nymph
Tungsten Red Dart Barbless Nymph
The Red Dart is a fast-sinking attractor nymph with a hot red body that stands out in the drift and triggers reaction strikes from trout that aren't actively feeding on a specific insect. The barbless hook makes for quick, easy releases — and it's required on many catch-and-release and special regulation waters across the Mountain West. No fumbling with forceps, just pop the hook and watch the fish swim off.
The tungsten bead drops this fly to the bottom faster than brass alternatives, making it an excellent point fly in a euro nymphing rig or as the heavy fly in a two-nymph tandem setup. The red body doesn't perfectly imitate any specific insect — and that's the point. Sometimes a fly that just looks "alive" and edible is exactly what triggers a take.
When to Fish It
Year-round, but especially effective in high water, off-color conditions, and winter when trout are less selective and more likely to eat an attractor. Fish it through pocket water, plunge pools, and fast riffles where the bright red body is easy for trout to spot in turbulent water. Also deadly as the point fly in a two-nymph rig with a more natural pattern above it.
