Shop Vac Nymph – High-Attraction Trout Nymph
Shop Vac Nymph – High-Attraction Trout Nymph
The Shop Vac is a high-attraction nymph that vacuums up fish when standard patterns aren't producing. The flashy, overdressed profile and heavy bead head make it an attention-getter in fast water and off-color conditions — situations where subtle, natural-looking nymphs get lost in the noise. The name says it all: it sucks fish in.
This is a searching pattern, not a match-the-hatch fly. When you don't know what trout are eating, or when nothing seems to be working, the Shop Vac gives you a high-probability option that covers a lot of bases. It's just buggy enough to pass for a mayfly nymph, just flashy enough to trigger reaction strikes, and heavy enough to stay in the zone.
When to Fish It
Year-round, but especially useful in fast or off-color water, during spring runoff, and in pocket water where trout make split-second feeding decisions. Fish it as a point fly in a two-nymph rig, or as the heavy fly in a euro nymphing setup. Target the heads of pools, current seams, and fast riffles where trout don't have time to over-inspect their food.

Why Anglers Stock This Fly
Sometimes you need a fly that just produces, regardless of what's hatching. The Shop Vac is that fly. It's the "just catch me a fish" pattern that belongs in every box. The flash and profile get attention, the weight keeps it in the zone, and the overall bugginess triggers eats from trout that weren't planning on feeding. Hand-tied with quality materials by tiers with over 30 years of experience.
