San Juan Worm (Single Fly) – Proven Trout Worm Pattern
San Juan Worm (Single Fly) – Proven Trout Worm Pattern
The San Juan Worm is one of the most controversial and one of the most effective flies in the sport. Purists hate it. Trout love it. The simple chenille body on a curved hook imitates the aquatic worms that trout eat year-round, especially after rain, during runoff, and in high or off-color water when worms get washed into the drift.
There's a reason guides on every major trout river in America keep San Juan Worms in their box — they catch fish when nothing else will. When conditions are tough, when hatches aren't happening, when the water is dirty and rising, this is the fly that saves the day.
When to Fish It
Year-round, but especially effective during and after rain events, spring runoff, high water, and in off-color conditions. Fish it deep, near the bottom, with a dead-drift. Use enough weight to keep it bouncing along the bottom where worms naturally tumble. It's also effective during non-hatch periods on tailwaters when trout are feeding opportunistically. Red and pink are the most popular colors.
