The PMD Sparkle Dun imitates a Pale Morning Dun mayfly in the act of emerging — half in the nymphal shuck, half adult. This transitional stage is when mayflies are most vulnerable and when trout feed on them most aggressively. The trailing shuck and upright wing profile create a silhouette that perfectly matches what trout see during a PMD hatch, making it one of the most effective emerger dry flies you can fish.

PMD hatches are a staple of western fly fishing from June through August. They produce reliable, predictable dry fly action on rivers across the Mountain West, and having the right emerger pattern is often the difference between catching fish and watching them rise to something else.

When to Fish It

Late spring through summer during PMD hatches, typically mid-morning to early afternoon. Fish it drag-free through pods of rising trout, targeting the fish that are consistently rising in a rhythm. The Sparkle Dun is especially effective when trout are refusing standard PMD dries — they're eating emergers, not fully hatched adults. Size 14-16 covers most situations.

Why Anglers Stock This Fly

The Sparkle Dun design was created specifically to solve the problem of trout refusing standard dry flies during hatches. The trailing shuck is the key — it tells trout "this is an easy meal that's stuck in its shuck and can't fly away." That vulnerability trigger is what makes this pattern so effective on selective fish. Hand-tied with quality materials by tiers with over 30 years of experience.
