Bead Head Olive Hare’s Ear Nymph
Bead Head Olive Hare’s Ear Nymph
The Olive Hare's Ear is a color variation of the classic Hare's Ear nymph — one of the most universally effective trout flies ever created. The olive tint more closely matches caddis larvae, BWO nymphs, and the many olive-colored aquatic insects found in trout streams. On waters where the natural insect life leans olive (and many do), this variation often outperforms the standard tan version.
Same buggy, translucent body. Same air-trapping fur fibers. Same rough, lifelike profile. Just a different color that matches a different set of naturals. Having both the standard and olive Hare's Ear in your box means you're covered regardless of what color the fish are keyed in on.
When to Fish It
Year-round, with special emphasis on waters with heavy caddis populations and during BWO seasons. Fish it exactly like the standard Hare's Ear — under an indicator, euro style, as a dropper, or on a swing. Sizes 12-16. It's especially effective on freestone rivers with olive-tinted substrates and vegetation.

Why Anglers Stock This Fly
Color matters more than most anglers think. A trout that refuses a tan Hare's Ear might eat the olive version without hesitation. Having both colors isn't redundancy — it's preparation. The olive variation fills a gap that the standard Hare's Ear leaves, especially on waters with heavy caddis and BWO populations. Hand-tied with quality materials by tiers with over 30 years of experience.
