Stonefly Nymph
Stonefly Nymph
A realistic stonefly nymph imitation that matches the large, dark nymphs found in rocky freestone rivers across the West. Stoneflies live in fast, oxygenated water clinging to rocks on the bottom — and when they get dislodged, trout eat them eagerly because they're one of the largest aquatic insects available. This pattern matches that substantial profile with a dark body and natural coloring.
When to Fish It
Year-round in freestone rivers, with peak effectiveness in late winter through early summer before stonefly hatches. Fish it deep along the bottom in fast water — riffles, pocket water, and boulder-strewn runs where stoneflies live. Use enough weight to keep it bouncing the bottom. It works as an anchor fly in a multi-nymph rig or on its own in heavy water. Sizes 8-12.
