When to fish it

Use it for subsurface fishing around reachable weed edges, shoreline drop-offs and other places where trout are feeding below the surface. Start by covering water when you are still locating fish. Once you find a productive depth, slow down or suspend a fly to spend more time in that layer.

How to fish it

  • Retrieve a bugger or leech: Start with a floating line, about a 9-foot 3X leader and an Olive Woolly Bugger #10. Keep the rod tip low and remove slack. Try short, roughly 3-inch strips with 2-second pauses, making a fan of casts to cover different angles. Compare a short and longer countdown to explore depth; sink time varies with the fly, line and conditions.
  • Suspend at the feeding depth: Fish one Balanced Leech or Ice Cream Cone Chironomid beneath an adjustable indicator, using a 3X leader with a 4X tippet extension. Measure the water depth and begin above the bottom or weed tops. Adjust in 6–12-inch steps, and let gentle wind movement work the fly instead of constantly pulling it along.
  • Make one useful change: If trout follow without taking, lengthen the pause, shorten the strip or try a smaller Pine Squirrel Leech #12. Clear weeds before changing patterns, and check depth before changing color. Switch between retrieving and suspending as fish behavior changes. For visible surface feeding, match the hatch with a dry fly from another selection.
