A weighted egg fly in orange or pink. During any spawn — trout, salmon, sucker — loose eggs drift downstream and every fish in the river keys on them. Protein doesn't get easier than this.
When to Fish It
Fall through spring: brown and brook trout spawn in fall, rainbows and cutthroat in spring, and egg-eating fish stack behind them. Dead-drift it near the bottom through runs below spawning gravel on light tippet. Never fish to actively spawning fish on redds.
