The soft hackle is the oldest fly design still in every shop bin, and for good reason: those sparse hen fibers pulse like the legs and wings of an emerging insect. Simple, ancient, deadly.

When to Fish It

All season, best during caddis and mayfly emergences. Swing it down-and-across and hang on — takes come on a tight line. Also deadly dead-drifted, then allowed to rise at the end of the drift on light tippet.
