Soft Hackle Nymph (Wet Fly)

The Soft Hackle is one of the oldest and most effective wet fly designs in existence — a sparse body with a collar of soft hen or partridge hackle that pulsates in the current with lifelike movement. It imitates emerging insects rising through the water column, and the swinging presentation is one of the most natural and deadly techniques in fly fishing.

When to Fish It

Year-round, but especially during any insect emergence. The classic technique is a down-and-across swing — cast at a 45-degree angle downstream, let the fly swing across the current on a tight line, and wait for the grab. The soft hackle fibers open and close as the fly moves through the water, creating a pulsing action that triggers strikes. Also effective dead-drifted as a nymph. Size 14.
