The Renegade is a dual-hackle attractor dry fly that doesn't imitate any specific insect — and catches trout anyway. The front white hackle and rear brown hackle create a unique profile on the water that suggests ants, beetles, midges, and general terrestrial/aquatic food. It's been catching fish for over a century because trout eat it instinctively, without needing it to match anything specific.

This is a mountain stream and meadow creek favorite. Small water, wild trout, warm summer afternoons — that's where the Renegade shines. It floats well, it's visible on the water, and opportunistic trout in small streams eat it without hesitation.

When to Fish It

Late spring through fall, primarily on smaller streams, creeks, and high-country water. Fish it through pockets, plunge pools, and riffles where wild trout hold and feed on whatever the current brings them. Also effective on larger rivers during terrestrial season. Dead-drift it or give it a slight skate across the surface — both techniques produce.

Why Anglers Stock This Fly

The Renegade is proof that fly fishing doesn't have to be complicated. It's simple, it's old-school, and it catches trout that have never seen a fly shop. If you fish small water — backcountry creeks, meadow streams, mountain brook trout water — the Renegade belongs in your box. It's one of the most fun dry flies to fish because the takes are always aggressive and confident. Hand-tied with quality materials by tiers with over 30 years of experience.
