Bead Head Prince Nymph – Classic Attractor Nymph for Trout
Bead Head Prince Nymph – Classic Attractor Nymph for Trout
The Prince Nymph is one of the most recognizable and effective attractor nymphs in fly fishing. The white biots, peacock herl body, and brown hackle create a flashy, high-contrast profile that trout eat aggressively in nearly any condition. It doesn't precisely imitate any single insect — instead, it suggests a variety of nymphs, from stoneflies to caddis to mayflies, triggering a general feeding response.
The Prince Nymph has been a staple of western fly fishing for decades, and its effectiveness extends far beyond the Rockies. It works on eastern limestone creeks, midwestern spring creeks, and everywhere in between. It's the nymph you tie on when you want to cover a lot of water and find active fish.
When to Fish It
Year-round as a prospecting and searching nymph. It's especially effective in pocket water, riffles, and the faster sections of runs where trout make quick feeding decisions. Fish it as the upper fly in a two-nymph rig with a more specific imitation below it, or as a standalone confidence pattern. Works under an indicator, euro style, or as a dropper. Sizes 10-16.

Why Anglers Stock This Fly
The Prince Nymph is the original "it just works" fly. The peacock herl body is one of the most effective materials in fly tying — the iridescent green sheen is irresistible to trout. Combined with the white biots that add visibility and the soft hackle that adds movement, you get a fly that fires on all cylinders. It belongs in every box in sizes 12-16 minimum. Hand-tied with quality materials by tiers with over 30 years of experience.
