When to fish it
Reach for this selection when trout are feeding on small midges or taking sowbugs below the surface. Watch a reachable current seam for repeated rises, drifting shucks and fish shifting beneath the water. Start below when fish are holding down; move to an emerger or dry when their feeding gives you a reason.
How to fish it
- Start below the surface: Use a floating line and a 9-foot 5X leader, with a Rainbow Sow Bug #18 followed by a Black Zebra Midge #20 or #22 on about 18 inches of 6X tippet. Add a small adjustable indicator and set the depth for the run. Use only enough weight to reach the feeding layer; repeated bottom snags mean it is time to shorten the setting or reduce weight.
- Follow the feeding level: Try a Black RS2 #22 or Top Secret Midge #22/#24 when fish are feeding just below the surface. For visible midge rises, switch to one Mother Shucker or Griffith Gnat #22 on a 5X leader with a 6X extension. Remove the indicator and weight, and let the fly follow the feeding lane without a wake.
- Improve the drift first: Keep casts short enough to control, mend before line tension pulls the flies, and clear any debris. Adjust indicator depth in small steps before cycling through patterns. Once the presentation looks right, compare midge sizes or change one pattern at a time. Larger mayfly or caddis hatches call for a different selection.
