John Barr's Copper John sinks faster than nearly any conventional nymph — wire body, bead head, epoxy wingcase. It isn't a precise imitation of anything, and the fish don't care.

When to Fish It

All season, any time you need to get deep fast: heavy riffles, plunge pools, high water. The classic hopper-dropper anchor fly. Fish it on light tippet as your point fly with something smaller behind it.
