The Adams is the most famous dry fly in the world, and it earned it: gray body, mixed hackle, upright wings. It looks enough like every mayfly that it works during almost any hatch.

When to Fish It

All season. If mayflies are on the water and you're not sure which ones, start with an Adams. Dead-drift it to risers or prospect the soft water on light tippet. Sizes 14–18 cover the vast majority of hatches.
